SkyWest pilot interview: what SkyWest publishes and how to prepare
Short answer: SkyWest publishes its first officer minimums and its hiring principles, but not its interview format or questions. It says it bases hiring on "character, attitude, skills, work record, training, experience and education," with guiding principles of "showing respect and providing excellent service." Prepare true stories that show those traits, a clear "why SkyWest", and solid basics for the airplane you fly now.

SkyWest first officer minimums (as posted)
From SkyWest's own first officer posting:
- Be at least 21 years of age
- A Commercial Pilot Certificate with multi-engine and instrument ratings
- An English Proficiency Endorsement
- An FCC Radiotelephone Operator's Permit
- A current FAA first-class medical certificate
- Be a US citizen or able to show proof of the right to work in the US
- A current passport or other travel documents to freely exit and re-enter the US
- The experience requirements of FAR 61.159 (1,500 hours total time, with the breakdown in 14 CFR 61.159)
Pilots on the restricted ATP path (as low as 1,000 or 1,250 hours with an aviation degree, or 750 for military) should read the posting and the regional guide for how the FAA rules work.
The SkyWest Pilot Pathway Program
SkyWest's Pilot Pathway Program is for pilots attending, or who have attended, a SkyWest partner school. It lasts "until ATP or R-ATP minimums are met" and includes a "guaranteed interview at SkyWest (must meet minimum hiring requirements)." The posting also mentions interview prep for participants. Partner schools publish their own extras, so check the school's terms directly.
SkyWest's values, in its own words
SkyWest names "guiding principles of showing respect and providing excellent service." Its about page uses the motto "Safety First" and says it is "committed to promoting dignity and trust in all we do." Have a story ready for respect, for service and for putting safety first.
What SkyWest does not publish
SkyWest does not publish its interview format, its questions, any assessment or personality test, a simulator evaluation, or how it scores candidates. So anything you read about the "SkyWest interview" on forums is a hint, not a fact, and may be out of date.
General guidance, hedged: regional interviews are often a single day with behavioral and technical questions. Expect questions on your experience so far, how you handle a captain you disagree with, and basic instrument and regulatory knowledge. If you're a lower-time pilot, expect questions about instructing and learning. Your recruiter's invitation is the best guide.
Questions to practice for SkyWest
From the Fourstripe question bank (written by us, not SkyWest's questions):
- Why do you want to fly for SkyWest?
- Walk me through your flying career so far.
- Tell me about a time you went above and beyond for a passenger or customer. (service)
- Tell me about a time you worked with a difficult crew member. (respect)
- Tell me about a time you noticed a safety issue and reported it. (safety first)
- Tell me about a time you disagreed with a captain.
- Tell me about a time a student did something unsafe while you were instructing.
- How has instructing made you a better pilot?
- When can you descend below DA or MDA on an instrument approach?
- When do you need an alternate under Part 91 IFR, and what minimums apply to it?
- You get a TCAS resolution advisory. What do you do?
- What's a stabilized approach, and when do you go around?
Example answer
Example answer, written by us. It is not a real applicant's story. Question: "Tell me about a time you went above and beyond for a customer."
"As a flight instructor I had a student, a retired nurse, who was terrified of stalls. She'd failed her first stage check partly because of it. I didn't want to just repeat the lesson, so I came in on my day off and we sat in a parked airplane for an hour while I explained what the wing was doing, with a simple drawing. Then we flew stalls at a higher altitude than usual, starting with very gentle ones, and she did the recovery every time.
She passed the stage check the next week, and eventually her private pilot checkride. What I took from it: when someone is scared, more repetition isn't the answer. I find out what they're afraid of first. I think that applies to a nervous passenger too."
Why it works: a specific person and action, service without bending any rule, a result, and a lesson tied to airline service.
Checklist for the week before
- Re-read the SkyWest first officer posting and your invitation

- Medical, passport, FCC permit and English Proficiency Endorsement current
- Logbook totals match your application
- Stories for respect, service and safety first
- Instrument basics: alternates, approach minimums, TCAS, stabilized approaches (see technical questions)
Practice this on Fourstripe. Pick the regional track and a panel captain asks TMAAT, about-you and technical questions out loud, follows up on what you said, and scores every answer. 7-day trial, then from $149 a week. Start a practice interview
